GRAND PRIX AFEX 2023
Michèle & Miquel - The Dark Line - Taiwan
This recognition rewards the work of a Franco-Catalan team of architects and landscape architects* for The Dark Line, an “eco-historical route” on a 3km section of a disused railway line. This cultural and hiking route, pedestrian and cyclist, connects old historic trails and industrial sites in a tropical mountainous region near Taiwan.
Concrete Iron shapes a new “railway”
“Some 500,000 concrete reinforcing steel bars follow one another, all parallel, to create a ground that is more empty than full, allowing the rocks and silt to be seen transparently in the tunnels and the luxuriant vegetation in the gorges. They gradually give shape to all the elements of furniture and signage, bend to draw the railings, benches, bicycle racks, small amphitheatres. The two old railway tunnels form long mysterious galleries which lead to the void of the gorges. Escaping to the side, a footbridge continues the route, in a long sinuous balcony corbelled over the gorges, revealing the landscape and a succession of distant reliefs »
